Since "the shot heard 'round the world" was fired at Lexington and Concord on that fateful April day in 1775, American musical culture has striven to distinguish itself and change the paradigm on the world's stage. Distinct only in the ways in which it blends our collective histories to emerge with something altogether new, American music intertwines the myriad ethnic traditions and stylistic influences that both make us unique and unite us as one. It is out of this social identity that the true great melting pot of musical composition blossoms, from which results Broadway, jazz, art song, and operas that tell our story. By drawing upon our past, we collectively create our future.
