The #UsesofMapping Project (@UsesofMapping) consists of an interactive exhibit of collage/maps and photographs by thinker-artist Qrescent Mali Mason that document the Self-Translation Cycle, a performance and visual art exhibit of Black feminist healing and a corresponding workshop/performances for Black women in West Philadelphia. Inspired by the work of Audre Lorde, Lorraine O’Grady, Adrian Piper, bell hooks, and other Black feminist thinker-artists, #UsesofMapping includes three aspects: 1) the framing, display, and exhibition of the Self-Translation Cycle, which includes the collage/maps “Uses of Death Dying” (2020), “Uses of Loving,” (2020) and “Self-Compassion Project” (2021), and the development of the interactive map/collage “Uses of Mapping” for display and annotation at the Paul Robeson House, 2) two workshop/performances that will facilitate Black women participants’ creation of their own body maps/collages and subsequent framing and exhibit, and 3) the online archiving of the #UsesofMapping Project, which will host and share the community-participant-developed maps with the wider public.
